Very Brief Health Update...

I'll be back later with more but I've been up for 36 hours straight - many of those hours spent in 2 hospitals. The good news is that they think they've figured out what I've got going on: pertussis. They won't know for sure till the nasal swab comes back, at which point it will probably be all but gone. I have a lot to say about this revelation but I leave you with this PSA as I try to get some desperately needed rest:

If you were born in the early 70s or before, chances are your pertussis vaccine has worn off. Do NOT wait another minute to call your doctor and schedule a re-vaccination. Seriously, if it costs 500 bucks, pay it and do it.

You do not want this illness.

PS: The theory is that I merely feel like I'm suffocating - though I might pass out. For what it's worth, to feel you're going to suffocate numerous times a day, even if the violent episodes are unlikely to kill you, is a horrible way to spend 1 minute, much less six to eight weeks.

They suspect I'm in the pre-recovery phase - which also happens to be the most horrible one.

And for those of you who might have come into contact with me, antibiotics I took weeks ago immediately stopped any contagion. Alas, they don't do anything to ameliorate the plight of the host.

  1. I'm so sorry you are still suffering, but glad you have a diagnosis. I have gotten a bug and spent most of yesterday in bed. That is nothing compared to what you discribe. I truely hope you are in the "pre-recovery" phase and will be feeling better soon. As for me, I had to go to work for a big meeting, but will be going home after and resting.

  2. Oh how horrible. I've heard that it's resurfacing, but you are the first person I've known to get it. I hope you are onto the next phase soon!

  3. Whooping cough! That is nasty! But at least a diagnosis may help get you more firmly on the mend, no?
And yes, maybe a re-up is in order for me. . .

  5. Well, at least you are in the (pre) recovery stage so it’s upwards from here, right? I must confess I have never before heard of pertussis. I was born in the early 70s, but having been born in Peru who knows if I was even vaccinated. Perhaps I need to do some research of my own. Hope you are getting some rest – 36 sleepless hours and two hospitals sounds like a nightmare.

  8. Good grief! This is dreadful. I'm hoping that you really are on the other side of this and that you feel much better very quickly.
Best wishes. Take good care of yourself.

  10. Oh K-line! Any post that include the words "nasal swab" can't be good. Feel better. At least you'll have a little peace of mind once you know definitively what is wrong.

  11. I'm not sure about other provinces, but in BC they are currently waiving the cost of the vaccine due to how many cases they're seeing recently. Get thee to a clinic/pharmacy! (I'd been meaning to do it for months, and then randomly got it as a bonus when I had to get a tetanus shot when I cut my hand a few weeks back. (Combined vaccine).) I hope you feel better soon.

  14. Thank you so much, everybody, for your well wishes. I can't say how grateful I am to hear from you all. It makes me feel so much less alone.

I will write more about this in the coming days, I expect, once I'm feeling a bit better.

  15. Get well soon!

I recently got a Tdap shot because I work in the health care industry and there was "potential for" a pertussis incident.

  18. I had whooping cough as a child. That was before the vaccine came out. Don't remember much about it. I hope you start feeling better soon. Pre-recovery sounds good, even if it doesn't feel good right now.
