Part Blue Sky, Part Mushroom

I actually think this thing is coming around:

Not to jump the gun, but my sense is this the scarf will not turn out to be overly open-knit (hallelujah).

It seems that short rows play a role in just about every knitting project you can imagine. Here, there are 4 short rows between Rows 1 and 2 and a repeat pattern of 6 full rows. Those short rows are like little wedges on the upper scarf (the outside curve part that looks a bit ruffle-y - cuz it is!).

I sense this is about half way finished (given how much yarn I have left).

I actually think the progression of colours is quite lovely. It's somehow like a cozy scarf and a miserable winter day, all at the same time.

What do you think so far? Do the colours appeal to you? Is it a weird shape, as far as you're concerned? Do tell...

  1. I really like the color scheme, but then, I just redid my entire bathroom in blue and grey, so obviously I think those colors blend excellently. ;-) I'll be interested to see how it looks on you with some of the clothes you normally wear.

    1. I think it's a good colour scheme - don't get me wrong. But sometimes what you wear and what you put on a wall work differently... Mind you, it's now done and I'm very pleased with the result.

  2. I think the curved shape will work well to hug your shoulders. The colours do blend quite nicely.

    1. It's more of a wrap around your neck kind of scarf, I think. Of course, it's blocking now and I have no idea of how I'll actually wear it yet...

  3. I'm doing my first pair of socks and have been procrastinating on the short row heel. Never turned a heel before and never done short rows. Hopefully soon I'll get over my fear and join the club.

    1. Sara: Never made a sock (just not interested in them!) but I suspect it's as easy to do short rows on them as it is on many other things. Don't be afraid!

    2. Turning the heel is actually quite easy and amazing. I am a big sock knitter. Kristin, you should really try it. I know socks can be "homemade" looking, but they are really a satisfying project and can be quite lovely to wear.

    3. I've to to try socks, if only to say I've done it. Of course, it's always the things I say I have no interest in, that end up piquing my interest :-)

  4. I love the way the colors are turning out. I also like the shape. I think a verigated project really has to be far along to get a feel of what it is going to look like. I think the asymetry combined with the color changes is quite lovely. I'm not sure this would work for a whole sweater, but I think it is great as a scarf.

    1. Thanks V! And you're right, you do have to get well into the project before the colours start to "take shape".

  5. That's a really beautiful colorway....I'm always attracted to ombre and yet never really know how to use it, this is gorgeous

    1. Thanks P! I think this is just enough (and not too much) of this kind of "extreme" colourwork.

  6. Well I love it! I missed your earlier post on this project. The colours look like a Noro yarn - I have a hat that stripes like that and your gauge looks great from here. Have confidence!

    1. I actually finished it last night and now it's blocking. I think I will love it. Thanks!

  7. I love it! I think the colours stripe just enough to add interest without being too much. And I think when you're wearing it the shaping will come into its own. It's going to be gorgeous!

    1. Oh, I hope so. As mentioned, it's blocking now. I might even be able to wear it tomorrow.

  8. oooh, it IS coming out nice, in an appealing fungally way. ;-)

I actually really like that it's curved. I think it will help it kindof snug into your neck on chilly days.

    1. It really worked out well in the end. I mean, I won't be making one of these every week, but it's an interesting wardrobe addition.
