Shout Out To The (Knitting) Experts: WTF?

Um, if anyone can tell me exactly how this is supposed to turn into a sweater, I'm all ears:

This is the LEFT side of the sweater. It's a mirror pattern. The theory is that the right side will look exactly the same, only in reverse.
My understanding is that the top left side and the top right side (on either side of that notebook) will be seamed together to form a sleeve.

Of course, this side is not finished, there's a decreasing section that's set to start in about an inch and a half.

In case you need a refresher, here's the only pic of the sweater I can find:

It appears that this thing is knit on the bias. Ok, ok, I suspect that's impossible. What I really mean is that it will be seamed so that the final garment falls on the bias.

In truth, it's looking less weird at this point than it has done since I began this endless swatch of stockinette. Now that I've achieved full width at the top (the "sleeve" area), I can almost envision how it will be seamed at the centre back and then under the arms/ at the side.

I still have concerns about the sizing. But really, maybe this is one of those projects you need to finish (at least one side) before you have any sense of what will come next?

Or y'all could enlighten me.

Note: If you have serious concerns that this is never going to be a sweater, feel free to voice them.

Oh, and one final pic to show the lovely colour:

Keep in mind that this is not blocked, so the stitch is not as even as it will look when all is done.

  1. I got nothing, sorry! But that's a big hunk of stocking stitch at tiny gauge, so I hope you have an inspired reader guide you toward assembling a stunning sweater.

    1. It's perplexing, yes? Damn, I was kind of hoping you were going to know what's going on :-)

  2. I wish I could help with the knitting but it's just not in my area of expertise. But that colour... oh that's pretty. Very pretty.

    1. Isn't it? It's very warm, but also a bit unusual.

  3. Haha. I'm not an expert but I'll play along with guess what it is. Is it like a raglan sleeve with that top part seaming at the neckline?

    1. I don't think so. But honestly, I'm playing this row by row. When I finish this side, I should have a better sense of how the sleeves are supposed to come together. I do know there's neck facing.

  4. It looks to me like it folds over the shoulder and the seam that forms the sleeve is on the underneath. I think it will be more obvious how it goes together when the pieces are done and you can fold them into shape.

    1. You are spot on! I figured that out (even though I couldn't understand what you meant when first I read this - my spatial reasoning is not fab) after a lot of trial and error. Thank you for this info!!

  5. I'm a fairly recent reader, this is a beautiful sweater and I love the color you've chosen. I wonder if looking at Elizabeth Zimmermann's Suprise Sweater might be of help? I've never knitted it (or knitted much at all), but do recall comments that anyone who does is wondering "how the heck does this work?" while knitting, and it's when it's done "Ahah!".

    1. Thank you so much Gail. You are not the first person to suggest that. I've got to start reading more by Ms. Zimmerman.

  6. Now that you have the shape, could you cut a piece in similar size some jersey knit fabric and play with it and try assembling it? Or pin it on your dressform? You might end up with another knit top that way! I hope you won't need four pieces in the end :) I like 3D puzzles, and wish I could help you figuring it out, the dimensions are a bit difficult to guess from the picture.

    1. Mona: That's a terrific idea - so smart! Why didn't I think of this. I was all set to do it, and may still if I encounter challenges, but by draping the thing on my dressform and on the floor, I think I've got something figured out.
