Atomic Age

I had an inspired shopping experience last weekend (thank you Lawrence) at Atomic on Queen Street West. A curator's dream, this shop full of excellently preserved, cheerful, mid-century modern and pop art pieces was a delight!

In addition to a fantastic selection of housewares (mint-condition, 1960s Swedish plastic carafes, anyone?), there's a beautiful, edited assortment of modernist Norwegian sterling silver jewelry and a capsule vintage clothing collection, mainly from the late 60s and early 70s.

I bought a phenomenal ring that looks strangely like a crown to me (pics to follow).

I also got this top:

Not that I'm any expert, but I suspect this piece is from the 1970s, masquerading as a piece from the 1940s. The fabric and stitching seem more modern than the design. (And the cross-over design has such beautiful drape, it's a joy to wear.)

Whatcha think?

  2. 40s or 70s, that top is gorgeous! And you're right, it drapes beautifully and looks fabulous on you (like everything, or course!)

Have I ever mentioned how much I lust after your glasses? I always wanted glasses but my eyesight never warranted it. My hearing however...I wonder if you can get sexy looking ear-horns nowadays. Hmmmmm.

  8. Monkey: Thanks! I really do love this new top. Truth is, it will be cool (as well as cool) all summer...

Ms. U: Thanks for your lovely comment. I snorted out loud when I read about the ear-horn. Hilarious! I got the glasses at Spectacle (in TO) but the brand is Face a Face from Paris. You'd probably still be able to get them - you can put them in a drawer and hope for age-related nearsightedness! :-) Of course, I joke. Perfect eyesight is a tremendous gift.

GJ: I smirked in that ridiculous way in every freakin' photo! These were the least of the smirkies.

Solo and Summer: Thanks to you both so much!

Bel: I totally thought it was 40s when I picked it up, but when you give the stitching a good go over, I don't think it's possible. I'll settle for the look. Still vintage, after all! And thank you so much!

Droll: Thank you. It was an exciting moment. Wait till you see the ring...

  15. Mardel: That's just it. The fabric is too modern for the 40s. Thanks for your lovely comment.

Tessa: They ARE bunny ears. And pretty soon, when TV goes digital, I'm going to have to come up with a new solution.

Janet, Stacey: Thank you so much!

Wendy: Thank you - the hair is taking on a life of its own. Actually, day after this photo I had a trim - and I can't wait for it to grow back because I kind of like the mop look. (It does get out of control after a while though...)

M: Thanks - it's the kind of top I imagine your granny would have worn and then passed along to you.
