Habit

So, there I was, all set to make a pair of socks for myself, when it occurred to me that you can't very well go to see your chemo-having mother without bringing her a pair of socks (especially if she stole another handmade pair when last you saw her).

But don't worry. I've got a plan.

It's called feeding the habit purchasing more (entirely necessary) yarn. And it comes with the added bonus of allowing me to experience, not only the Sweet Georgia Tough Love Sock, but also the Madeline Tosh Sock (which I was secretly traumatized to leave at the store).

To wit:

Madeline Tosh Sock in Smokey Orchid
Yeah, this is the colour of the year for me. I've purchased variations on "merlot" so many times in the last 2 months, I can't even keep track. Well, I can keep track because I archive my entire stash. And no, that doesn't make me weird.

So, I'll bring (one half-complete) pair of socks to NC, and finish it while I'm visiting. And then I'll start the next pair just for me.

Today's questions: Do you buy the same colour of yarn over and over again (at least for a few months at a time)? Do you like Tosh sock? Do you like this colour (really, the stock photo doesn't do it justice)? Does everyone steal your homemade socks?? Let's talk.

  1. Wow, selfless knitter, good for you! I knitted a shrug for my mom when she visited, then I promptly reintroduced her to knitting so she can knit her own.

I buy gray a lot. It's hard for me to resist gray. And now the lime green thing, I can see how that might get a little out of hand if I don't pay attention.

Your yarn looks lovely. I can't wait to see the finished socks.

    1. I'm not that selfless, more like compulsive :-) And I know you love grey - but grey is such a perfect neutral. So I can't fault you!

  2. Love that colour! I always fall into the trap of buying the same colour over and over. No regrets though! That's lovely to knit socks for your mum. Hope she's doing great. Positive vibes on their way! :)

    1. Well you do love the pinks and pastels. But they look great on you so I say keep wearing them.

  3. I just discovered madelinetosh at my LYS and am now completely obsessed with the whole line. I haven't used sock, but I'm knitting socks out of light... which I don't think I should be but I'm doing it anyway. That color is incredible. I need some. Kudos to making your mama socks. I think there's so much love in each pair!

    1. I'm not usually on the "love this yarn that everyone raves about" bandwagon. When my expectations are raised, it tends to go wrong. But this yarn is SO fabulous - in ways that just get around you. You knit, and as you knit, the yarn shows a sparky personality.

  4. Yarn? Not so much, but that probably has more to do with the fact I keep myself out of the yarn shops.

Fabric? Oh yeah...I'm as bad as Alexandra, I LOVE gray, especially dark charcoal grey. And if it's got a soft chalk-like stripe in it, it's hard for me to resist. You don't want to know how many skirt lengths of gray pinstripe I have in my stash (and I don't sew skirts!)

    1. For some reason, I'm not prone to this with fabric (though I do have a lot of dark wash denim - but c'mon, that's just normal!)

  5. One look at my stash and any attempt to cry "not me" is entirely foiled. Sigh. I go through total colour obsessions without even realizing it. Merlot is quite a lovely one.

    1. Ha! Merlot is rather easy. It's a bit of colour, but not too bright.

  6. I didn't know archiving my stash was weird - I do it too cause I love them lists! And yes, I totally buy yarn in the same colour family, all in clusters. I had a blue period earlier this year, I've now moved into neutrals, and seem to always be in a pink shopping mood. Odd how this happens, eh? Have fun in NC!

    1. It's not weird!! Who doesn't love lists? Really. You were in your neutral mood when last we met. And I seemed to buy everything in variations on merlot - and yellow :-)

  7. I can't speak to yarn, but I reach for the same colours in fabric and clothing over and over. Life is too short to work with colours you don't like.

  8. I love the color of your sock yarn, but I have a weakness for purples and grays. I guess I'm lucky in that the potential sock thieves in my life have very different sized feet, either much bigger or much smaller. So if I make a pair in my size I will be able to keep them. I do often get recruited to make socks for those odd-sized feet, but I get to keep those I make for myself.

    1. Thank you! And very good for you with the right size feet. :-)

  9. I think I've got everyone in the family socked up for the moment, so I quickly knit myself a pair this summer. And I notice that I've, um, also ended up wearing the pair that I had set aside as a just-in-case Christmas gift for whomever. . . .I'd start a new pair except that I'm knitting those forever pants for my g'daughter. . .

    1. There's no point in knitting socks ahead of time. They will find feet, apparently. :-)

  10. You know, I realized recently that when it comes to color, I'm like a picky eater. Seriously. So, I like that you apologetically buy merlot because what I would do is waste time looking for the perfect shade of merlot....

  11. What ? ? ? you haven't bought Merlot fabric as well ? It seems when I have a new best color it pops up everywhere.

    1. You know, there's not much merlot fabric - though I did buy it for those culottes last year. I'd definitely buy it again :-)

  13. I have to admit I'm always drawn to the same colours...yarn or fabric. I haven't tried the Tosh yarns yet. I really do think I need to!

    1. You have to try them, like, right now! You will love them. Not sure where the line comes from. It might be English. I should look that up.

  14. They're in Benbrook, TX...I checked their site...that was very foolish thing to do. Such beautiful yarn...I must knit up what I have as fast as I can so I can buy some more. The colours are amazing.
