After weeks of agonizing over what covering to wear, she's opted to just be bald. And since then, a haze of anxiety has lifted. Today she and my (now also totally bald) father went to the food store, the lipstick store and the Apple store. With nary a care! (Happily, she has much more energy today than she has had since she started chemo. In truth, last week was like a really bad drug trip that went on for a fucking long time.)
It's a rare person who looks as good bald as with hair and I'm really grateful that my mother falls into this category. As is she.

Being bald is awesome, though somewhat less so in winter. Is she hinting at you for handknit hats yet? :-)
ReplyDeleteUm, yes! I'm actually knitting one for her right now (the Sideways Grande - shown in my Ravelry projects). And one for my father too cuz his head will get just as cold :-)

DeleteGlad to hear your mum is doing well. Once I got over the initial shock of it, bald wasn't a problem. In fact, it was very good for hot flashes. ;) I found I didn't want a cap for sleeping - too warm. I only wore a cap or scarf when I was going out someplace where I thought it might be an issue and then it was only something very light weight.

Oooh, good point. This is a really meaningful step on this wellness journey, I sense, because it was a big issue that she didn't know how to resolve. I'm of the opinion that one should meet fears head on - like bullishly. That's my nature and it gets me into trouble sometimes :-) But this is one of those times, my mother said, that going out and meeting the fearsome thing was entirely liberating and joyful. What an awesome lesson for us all!
