Orange is the New Black

I've been working pretty hard lately which, as I'm sure I've harped on about a lot, leaves little time for things like sewing. Moreover, the weather just went supernova, bat shit, freakin' gorgeous. (No, one absolutely cannot count on it in May, but I'll take what I can get). The combo of delicious outdoor time and little other time has made for quite a shop-y Krissie.

In truth, I have a rationale. In truth, I always have a rationale, as should we all, so let's just pat ourselves on the back and get to the (regrettably mediocre) photos. Cuz I'm not spending time inside with a camera when I could be on every patio within a 3-block radius drinking Cava:

Fossil Preston Crossbody Monarch - $178 CDN
See this adorable expansion feature which I love on any bag? So good for when you need to put an umbrella in there...
Alas, this photo doesn't give you a true sense of the colour, but it shows the proportions.
The orange colour has been discontinued in this style, which shocks me because orange is the perfect neutral, in my books. Seriously, it goes with everything and it tells people that you have personality. Plus it's cheerful. I'm wearing this today with a pink/brown/orange tropical floral print dress (handmade years ago but I can't be bothered to link to it right now) and it looks terrific.

But back to the rationale... Y'all know I cannot carry around a large bag any longer. (Brief aside: You shouldn't be either. Eventually, it's bound to lead to pain, especially if you walk long distances...) But the mini-bag I purchased in the fall was just all kinds of "wrong shape" and slightly too small. I mean, you have to recognize that the bare minimum needs to come with you everyday. What I discovered, when I transferred all of the things I was carrying in my oddly rectangular Rudsak bag (and I must carry them), was that they all fit just beautifully in a square shape (10x10). Not to mention that the expandable zipper feature on the Preston is all kinds of genius, if not novel. I never seem to find a bag I like with this feature, however, so this is a lucky state of affairs.

What do I carry (in case you wonder)? Glasses case with either sun or regular glasses contained within. (Non-negotiable and my sunnies are absurdly large so this case is big.) Credit card holder. A bit of cash (not in wallet), subway token holder (size and shape of a business card), keys, work ID, wireless headphones and iPhone, lipstick, lipbalm. Yeah, that's it. You'd be amazed to find how difficult it is to fit this in a small bag.

I've never owned a Fossil bag before. I'd actually never heard of Fossil till I ran into the shop on Bloor Street the other day. I'm really not a "bag person" and I tend to stick to Roots, M0851 and Rudsak on the rare occasion when I do add to my little collection. But the brand seems to be of quality and the leather on this orange one is like butter. Totally gorgeous. Small complaint: I hate the name which, for some reason reminds me of Diesel (so not my scene). Could they not have come up with something prettier? As it happens, the store didn't have the orange colourway in stock, so I ended up buying it at the Bay (also so not my scene but if you've gone to the upgraded, Sak's-funded one on Queen Street it's looking pretty awesome-American). The Bay was having a Mother's Day sale and I convinced the SA to give me an extra 5% which saved me 20% in total. Not bad (and I wouldn't have got this discount at the flagship store).

So, that's my weekend treat - very practical AND affordable. Thoughts?

  1. I'm a huge Fossil fan - I carry one of their wallets, when I choose to carry a wallet. Pretty bag, and I love the orange. Unfortunately, I'm off cross-body bags at the moment - they have thrown off my alignment and that upsets my knee. I try not to upset my knee.

    1. Interesting that the cross bodies cause you alignment issues. What a pain! I find they're better than shoulder bags (which put to much pressure on one side at any given time). I will have to get to know this brand better. They do seem to sell some pretty things...

    1. I know! It's so Hermes rip-off, I realize, but it's gorgeous. That's why Hermes took it on! :-)

  3. Love the orange! My favourite colour. But where's the space for the traveling knitting? ;)

I have a backpack - much easier on my neck and shoulders and I can actually carry a tonne of groceries without pain. Though wish I could find a more stylish one that doesn't look like I'm heading to highschool. However it would need to have all the features I'm used to in my MEC pack. Like finding a unicorn!

    1. Ha! OK, unless you're doing a sock, you're out of luck. And I do like a back pack - but it often inspires me to take more stuff than i actually need. I'm one of those people who will take as much as the space will permit. Small bags keep me honest - and tiny back packs look bizarre :-)

  4. That's a great bag!!! I once had a nice pumpkin orange bag that got me compliments everywhere I went. It just went with pretty much everything in my closet at that time. I still miss it.

I love crossbody bags too... Hands free and since its always on me, I don't have to remember to pick it up and carry around.

    1. Thanks Kay! How sad that you no longer have the orange bag. You must replace it!

  5. That bag is gorgeous!! Orange is such a happy color!

I stopped carrying leather bags long ago. I couldn't seem to keep them clean. And, they weighed a bit too much.
I downsized to a small Baggallini. I now carry their 'large wallet'. It holds more than you might think. It holds my iphone 5, but I think that an iphone 6 might be too big.
I deliberately chose sunglasses that were not huge, and my glass case can fit right under the zipper.
I went with boring black, but you have inspired me to be bit bolder with my next color choice.'

    1. Wow - you get by with a large wallet? Impressive. I have to go look that up... Alas, I need huge sunglasses - I'm light sensitive and I need lots of coverage...

  6. I love orange as a neutral--wore my patent leather orange thong (that word!) sandals just the other day . . .

  7. Happily awaiting this bag which I ordered after reading your post. It wasn't out of stock in this color when I did my google search and was directed to a random midwestern department store with free shipping, no sales tax, and a discount coupon. Can't say what grabbed me when I saw your post..... obviously the color, Hermes reference, already love the brand, ... and a unique addition to my library of too many purses!

    1. Yay! Will tell you this, even if you spray the bag with protector, it will absorb dark dye. So don't wear it with your denim unless it's faded or washed many times. Ask me how I know! (Off to the leather guy to figure out a cleaning option. I'm sure he'll tell me the best way to fix this is to avoid it!) BTW, I LOVE this bag and I intend to buy it many more times - just likely in darker colours given that I wear dark denim almost daily.

  8. Okay, based on your wisdom, I think I'll keep the watch strap Husband bought me for my birthday, Hermes, the double strap, for which I thought I'd pointed out a light neutral leather as more summer-suitable than my black. All wrapped up in Hermes Orange on the table this ,owning was an orange strap, which I love but which gives me pause in a watch I wear every single day. But your wisdom, as always, is convincing. (And yeah, I know, I've been very, very spoiled). Note that my H watch was acquired in my 6th decade; the others decades I often wore a Fossil watch-they used to come in the greatest illustrated tin boxes, might still.
Love your bag--suspect you'll wear it right out....

    1. Um - keep it!! It's orange! It's Hermes! No need to justify being spoiled. I am to be spoiled as often as I can swing it. And I hope in my 6th decade to have your kind of loot :-)

  9. I did keep it! And I've been wearing it this week and loving it! So you and your wisdom are a part of my daily life. . . (as is, you've cleverly noted, a need to justify. . . ;-)
