New Fave Drink

My husband thinks I'm high on drugs but I quite like Almond Breeze Vanilla Unsweetened almond milk. As it is lactose and soy free (lord, I hate soy milk), it's more analogous to coconut water than anything milky, but it does have an opaque (rather than merely watery, cloudy) and creamy quality.

Furthermore, it's completely sans sugar. It's actually kind of neutral/salty, which is totally palatable, if slightly strange. I added a pinch of granulated sugar (maybe a quarter of a teaspoon to a cup of Almond Breeze) and it went from fine to fab. The sugar undercut the saltiness but did not make it, in any way, sweet. If you like sweet drinks, a tsp. or 2 of maple syrup would be great, I suspect, and still less sugary-cloying than the majority of pre-sweetened rice, soy, dairy and almond beverages out there.

It's a very satisfying drink. You can feel it resetting electrolytes (that's how it feels to me) and it's actually got a bit of fat, protein and fibre. Furthermore, for those of us trying to keep carbs in check (oh, who are we kidding, I'm so carbing out this summer it's a scandal), it's got a mere 2, naturally occurring grams per cup.

Here's hoping some kind soul in the Blue Diamond marketing department reads this and sends me a case of the single serve containers. I could only find one remaining tetrapak of the large size at the Metro.

  1. There are single serve sizes?!?

I quite like the chocolate flavour as a treat - it's like drinking a box of chocolate covered almonds.

  2. It works beautifully as a dairy substitute in lots of recipes.

  3. AGREED! Lattes made of the vanilla, sweetened with a bit of stevia (read up on it, it's great!) or plain almond milk with some caramel syrup takes the latte from nice to absolute TREAT.

  4. We've been drinking this for several years. The only thing better is home-made almond milk, which is a little bit of work. Instead of straining it, we blenderize it longer (cashews, too!).

  5. I switched to almond milk (the same brand too!) a few months ago, and it's really good. Nom nom nom. I make White Russians with them (which sort of defeats the purpose of their healthiness?)

  6. I used to use this milk all the time on my cereal!

  7. Girl, you make me chuckle. That first sentence... too funny. But, I don't think you're high at all... that stuff is Yummy with a capital Y!

  10. I've been thinking of trying this, but only see the large containers and didn't want to risk it if I didn't like it at all. Thanks for the detailed review. Because I bet if someone tried it expecting it to be sweet they would be very dissapointed. Gonna try it now.

  11. I like the sweetened, flavored versions for making certain drinks (someone mentioned White Russians and I've certainly done that). However, I find that I don't react that well to too many almonds in my diet and have phased it out except for special occasions.

I think you should know I've started attempting to knit again. I'm blaming you.

  12. Hey All: I had no idea that everyone was into the almond milk!

The idea of adding caramel or booze is fantastic! Though I'm enjoying simple vanilla extract :-)

LSCG: I am happy to take the blame. Lord knows, I blame so many others :-)
